density studies

density study

Density is a distinct, measureable characteristic of the urban form, however is rarely analysed carefully and only mentioned wantonly. High density to one designer might could be low density to another, and very rarely do academics or professionals even attempt to define ‘density’.

This analysis utilised a strict definition of density, reflecting the units of 100 square meters of useable floor space, in different areas of the city. The density was further analysed by its compositional parts, to depict the percentage of the overall activity in an area attributed to specific activities.

These density studies were applied to the existing urban form as well as to the proposed urban form and a reference zone, in order to better visualise the ultimate impact the final masterplan will have on the city. This analysis received a special mention upon receipt of the RIAS Urban Design Student Award in 2012.
